Small scale energy cascade of the solar wind turbulence

چکیده

Magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind are distributed according to Kolmogorov’s power law f below the ion cyclotron frequency fci. Above this frequency, the observed steeper power law is usually interpreted in two different ways: a dissipative range of the solar wind turbulence or another turbulent cascade, the nature of which is still an open question. Using the Cluster magnetic data we show that after the spectral break the intermittency increases toward higher frequencies, indicating the presence of non-linear interactions inherent to a new inertial range and not to the dissipative range. At the same time the level of compressible fluctuations raises. We show that the energy transfer rate and intermittency are sensitive to the level of compressibility of the magnetic fluctuations within the small scale inertial range. We conjecture that the time needed to establish this inertial range is shorter than the eddy-turnover time, and is related to dispersive effects. A simple phenomenological model, based on the compressible Hall MHD, predicts the magnetic spectrum ∼ k, which depends on the degree of plasma compression α. Kinetic scale turbulence and dissipation in the solar wind: key observational results and future outlook.

Turbulence is ubiquitous in the solar wind. Turbulence causes kinetic and magnetic energy to cascade to small scales where they are eventually dissipated, adding heat to the plasma. The details of how this occurs are not well understood. This article reviews the evidence for turbulent dissipation and examines various diagnostics for identifying solar wind regions where dissipation is occurring....

Parallel and perpendicular cascades in solar wind turbulence

MHD-scale fluctuations in the velocity, magnetic, and density fields of the solar wind are routinely observed. The evolution of these fluctuations, as they are transported radially outwards by the solar wind, is believed to involve both wave and turbulence processes. The presence of an average magnetic field has important implications for the anisotropy of the fluctuations and the nature of the...

Mhd-driven Kinetic Dissipation in the Solar Wind and Corona

Mechanisms for the deposition of heat in the lower coronal plasma are discussed, emphasizing recent attempts to reconcile the Ñuid and kinetic perspectives. Structures at magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales may drive a nonlinear cascade, preferentially exciting high perpendicular wavenumber Ñuctuations. Relevant dissipative kinetic processes must be identiÐed that can absorb the associated energy ...

Comment on "Scaling laws of turbulence and heating of fast solar wind: the role of density fluctuations".

Incompressible and isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in plasmas can be described by an exact relation for the energy flux through the scales. This Yaglom-like scaling law has been recently observed in the solar wind above the solar poles observed by the Ulysses spacecraft, where the turbulence is in an Alfvénic state. An analogous phenomenological scaling law, suitably modified to take i...

A dynamical model of plasma turbulence in the solar wind.

A dynamical approach, rather than the usual statistical approach, is taken to explore the physical mechanisms underlying the nonlinear transfer of energy, the damping of the turbulent fluctuations, and the development of coherent structures in kinetic plasma turbulence. It is argued that the linear and nonlinear dynamics of Alfvén waves are responsible, at a very fundamental level, for some of ...
